יהוהThe Names of Yahweh

One God - many windows into His heart. Scripture joins the sacred name Yahweh to eight great words: Jireh, Rapha, Nissi, Shalom, Sabaoth, Rohi, Tsidkenu, Shammah. Each was born in a real moment of need, and each is a promise you can still pray today.

The covenant names of Yahweh - eight promises, one faithful God

When the Bible wants you to know who God is, it tells you His name. And when it wants you to know what He is for you, it joins that name to a promise. These compound names - often written “Jehovah Jireh” in older books - are all built on the same sacred name, Yahweh, the great “I AM.”

Yahweh’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.Proverbs 18:10

1. Yahweh Jireh - The LORD Will Provide

On Mount Moriah, at the last possible moment, Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket - God’s own provision in place of his son. “Abraham called the name of that place ‘Yahweh Will Provide.’ As it is said to this day, ‘On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided’” (Genesis 22:14). Pray this name when the need is real and the answer is nowhere in sight.

2. Yahweh Rapha - The LORD Who Heals

Three days into the wilderness, Israel found only bitter water. God made it sweet, and gave His people a name to hold: “I am Yahweh who heals you” (Exodus 15:26). He heals bodies, and He heals the bitterness of hearts.

3. Yahweh Nissi - The LORD Is My Banner

While Moses’ hands were lifted in prayer, Israel prevailed over Amalek. Moses built an altar and called it “Yahweh is my banner” (Exodus 17:15). A banner is what an army rallies to; this name declares whose victory the battle is.

4. Yahweh Shalom - The LORD Is Peace

Gideon, hiding from the Midianites and afraid for his life, met the Angel of Yahweh and heard: “Peace be to you. Don’t be afraid.” He built an altar and named it “Yahweh is Peace” (Judges 6:24). Shalom is more than quiet - it is wholeness, well-being, nothing missing and nothing broken.

5. Yahweh Sabaoth - The LORD of Hosts

Barren and heartbroken, Hannah poured out her soul to “Yahweh of Armies” (1 Samuel 1:11) - the God who commands every host of heaven. It is the name of God’s unlimited resources, and it appears hundreds of times in the prophets.

6. Yahweh Rohi - The LORD Is My Shepherd

David, who had kept sheep on these same hills, sang the most beloved line in the Psalter: “Yahweh is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1). The Almighty walks ahead of His flock, leads to still waters, and restores the soul. See Yahweh in the Psalms →

7. Yahweh Tsidkenu - The LORD Our Righteousness

Through Jeremiah, God promised a righteous Branch of David’s line, “and this is his name by which he will be called: Yahweh our righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6). What we could never earn, He Himself becomes for us - a promise Christians see fulfilled in the Messiah.

8. Yahweh Shammah - The LORD Is There

The last verse of Ezekiel names the city of God’s future: “Yahweh is there” (Ezekiel 48:35). Every promise ends here - not in a place, but in a Presence.

How to Pray the Names of Yahweh

These names are not magic formulas - they are invitations to trust. Bring the name that meets your need: “Yahweh Jireh, You see what I lack - provide.” “Yahweh Shalom, speak peace to my fear.” “Yahweh Rohi, lead me today.” To pray the name is to remember who He has already shown Himself to be.
