
If Genesis introduces Yahweh, Exodus unveils Him. Here God speaks His name aloud, acts in mighty power to redeem His people, and descends on the mountain in fire to make them His own.
The Burning Bush (Exodus 3)
When Moses asks God’s name, God answers with the revelation that has echoed through the ages:
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM… Yahweh… This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.”Exodus 3:14–15
“By My Name Yahweh” (Exodus 6:3)
God tells Moses that, though the patriarchs knew Him as God Almighty, He is now making His covenant name fully known: “by my name Yahweh I was not known to them” (Exodus 6:3).
“That You May Know I Am Yahweh”
Again and again through the plagues and the Red Sea, God declares His purpose: that Egypt and Israel alike would “know that I am Yahweh” (Exodus 7:5; 14:18). The Exodus is God signing His name across history.

ExodusYahweh at Sinai (Exodus 20)
At Mount Sinai, Yahweh gives the Ten Commandments, beginning: “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt” (Exodus 20:2). The third commandment guards the holiness of His name.
